There are some strange cats in Chinatown...

This precious little creature tried to claw our eyes out from behind a locked store gate.

Later, we stumbled across this poor white cat surronded by thousands of tasty goldfish in a pet store, all safely out of reach in their bowls. I shot this one from the street through one of the fish bowls.

The Carlton Arms Hotel, here in New York, cannot be described. It has to be experienced. As described on their web site, "The Carlton Arms Art Project started in the late 80's when a small group of creative people decided to paint the rooms of, at the time, a dark and ill shelter for prostitutes, drug addicts, outlaws and the hopeless. Today, everyone of the 52 rooms and hallways are painted or decorated by artists that came from all over the world, brought their craft and passion and transformed the rotten hole into an unique Manhattan site where the walls explode with color and art."

My wonderful girlfriend rented us a room for the night to celebrate my birthday. It was, indeed, an experience. I've tried to capture some of it in the photos below.

I was sitting at my desk at work, nearing the end of another long day. At about 4:15, the lights dimmed briefly, then came back. No big deal, I thought. It had happened before. Probably someone accidentally leaning on the light switch again. Seconds later, they dimmed again, then, my computer shut down violently. This was, indeed, a big deal.

I initially thought it was just my building, then quickly learned it was all of New York, and well beyond. I got scared and walked 50 blocks to my apartment. I always suspected that we would have another day just like 9/11, and this was eerily similar. People waiting on lines for pay phones, their cell phones out of commission. Mobs of humanity walking up the middle of the street and across the bridges. Traffic at a stand still. The subways shut down. Gradually getting in touch with people as the day turned into night. Then all of the "where were you when" stories, on and on, over and over.

All in all, it was just an inconvenience. But I'll never forget that dark night, and I tried to capture some of it with my camera.

Back from Maine. The weather did not cooperate, but it was still lots of fun.

Finally...

It took the better part of a month, but my blog is finally functioning properly.

I know I'm not the best photographer in the world, and many of my pictures are just me pointing the camera at something and pressing the button. But I'm really enjoying it. I want to learn more and get better. I want people to look at my pictures and get chills. I know that I'm not at that stage yet, but I hope to be there someday.

It's a typical hot July here in New York. The sky down by the river the other night was amazing. I sat on the pier for 90 minutes and took picture after picture.

Coney Island, July 4th, 2003

We went for the hot dog eating contest, but the crowd was too large and we didn't get anywhere near the stage.

Coney can't be described...time has passed it by, yet unlike other former NYC landmarks, it lacks any sense of charm or nostalgia. It acknowledges the past, as seen in the freak show photos below, yet few people seem to care. It's mostly feels sad and sort of wrong. Not quite kitschy, not quite historic, not quite energetic. Just stuck.

I love the "No Refunds" sign in the background of the photo below.

Coney is full of old, boarded up buildings. I'm guessing that the "Terminal Hotel" once referred to some type of transportation terminal. But it's more appropriately seen as an ending.

Despite it all, Coney drew a massive crowd on the Fourth of July. This photo reminds me of the old black and white shot of thousands upon thousands of beachgoers crowding for every inch of space on the beach. The crowds in 2003 are much more diverse. Black, Hispanic, Asian, Russian, etc etc.
